Destiny 2's The Dawning Event Adds Snowball Fights, Mayhem Mode, And More

The first seasonal event for Destiny 2 will bring lots of snow and the return of a crazy Crucible mode.

The holiday season’s arrival means many changes are headed to Destiny 2. In the game’s first seasonal event, known as The Dawning, players will notice the Tower and Farm have festive lights and decorations to celebrate the Traveler’s Golden Age. Of course, outside the gift giving and holiday cheer are plenty of battle changes, all of which can be experienced in the limited-time event that runs Tuesday, December 19th, through Tuesday, January 9th. You can view the images below to get a closer look at how Destiny 2 will look next week when The Dawning begins.

In a blog post from Bungie, the developer detailed the main features awaiting Guardians in The Dawning, including winter-themed Milestones, snow effects, and the return of a PvP mode full of anarchy. As snowfall is prevalent around the social areas, it’s only appropriate for Guardians to participate in friendly snowball fights. If that’s not competitive enough, though, Strikes will also give players a chance to “blast an enemy with a snowball to stun them and deal big damage.”

For Crucible changes, fans who experienced the first Destiny‘s Dawning event will either be happy or extremely uneasy to see the return of Mayhem. Within the fast-paced mode, Guardians’ abilities recharge must faster than usual, which means grenades, projectiles, and even Super Charges can be utilized much more frequently. Also, point values are raised, keeping PvP matches intense by never letting one team feel too comfortable with their score.
The hard work of Mayhem and the holiday Strikes should offer some incentive, too. With the new Milestones of winter, each week will provide a unique challenge that rewards a Dawning Engram, which will hold gear specific to The Dawning. If players don’t receive the piece of gear they had their eye on, seen below, Tess in the Tower will sell the gear on a weekly basis. “On one week or another during the three-week event, you’ll find every Dawning-themed Exotic (ship, ghost, sparrow, emote) and every Dawning-themed Legendary armor piece on her shelves,” stated Bungie.

It wouldn’t be a holiday-themed event without gifts, and Guardians will have the ability to “venture to other worlds and craft a unique gift for the vendors and agents you find in the Tower and beyond.” While Bungie didn’t specify what the gifts will look like, at least one can be sent daily to another player, so there may be some useful goodies if there’s a daily cap.
The Dawning is arriving at an already busy time, with the launch of the new raid lair mode for Leviathan and the addition of the Masterworks weapon class. Players can now take on a new area of the raid to fight a new boss and earn Engrams, which could house the new class of weapon that includes a special perk.

Destiny 2's Curse of Osiris expansion launched earlier this month. Curse of Osiris initially locked non-DLC owners out of some content they previously had access to. Bungie has since reversed course on this to some degree, but the harder, Prestige version of the weekly Nightfall remains Curse of Osiris-only. Additionally, there will be weeks where the Trials of the Nine multiplayer activity features an Osiris map, which means only those with the DLC will have access to it.
Destiny 2 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on Amazon.
