How does PUBG’s performance compare between Xbox One and PC?
Neither the Xbox One nor Xbox One X are the ideal platforms for PUBG, but one is definitely better than the other.
Following the release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One, Digital Foundry is once again doing the Lord’s work and sifting through the technical details to compare each version of PUBG.
Players found that, by plugging in a keyboard to an Xbox One while running PUBG, one can access a PC-style settings menu, revealing that the Xbox One version of the game is actually operating on the PC version’s Very Low visuals preset.
This is where Digital Foundry starts to compare the three versions: Xbox One, Xbox One X, and PC. Whereas the normal Xbox One compares to the Very Low PC preset, Xbox One X is closer to PC’s Medium preset.
Xbox One has better textures than a straight-up Very Low PC preset, but the draw distance is way worse. Likewise, the Xbox One X compares similarly to a Medium PC preset in textures and anti-aliasing, but falls short in draw distance.
Perhaps the most interesting comparison is between the Xbox One and Xbox One X. Lighting, texture details, draw distance, and depth of field are all much stronger on the X. Even smaller details like sun flares are present in Xbox One X, whereas it’s absent in the Xbox One version. The difference between the Xbox One and Xbox One X versions is truly striking, even beyond comparing 1080p to 4K.
We played both versions in the office and can personally attest to the contrast. Textures loaded in faster and contained much more detail on the Xbox One X, and it seemed to maintain a high frame rate more consistently than the Xbox One version. Still, neither version locked to 30 FPS, which is a major detriment to a game that relies on precision aiming and quick reactions in some situations.
It’s important to keep in mind that PUBG is still in early access on PC and the Xbox One’s Game Preview program, so hopefully these technical blemishes will be worked out in time. As of right now, however, there are clear issues that need to be addressed in future patches.
