New Tomb Raider Game Officially Announced

The Tomb Raider announcement we were expecting is finally here—sort of.

We’ve known for over a year now that the next Tomb Raider game will be called Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Heck, we’ve even seen the logo.
Now, the official Tomb Raider Twitter account has confirmed that a new Tomb Raider game is in the works. It just hasn’t gone so far as to officially reveal that the game will, in fact, be called Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
In a “message to our fans,” the Tomb Raider Twitter announced that “it won’t be very long between the official reveal and when you can play,” and that the game’s “journey will begin with a major event in 2018.”
Even cuter, the first letter of every sentence in the announcement spells out the word “shadow,” which all but confirms the title:

Considering the Tomb Raider movie is premiering March 16th, 2018, we don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to assume that publisher Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics would want to tap into the Hollywood hype and reveal Shadow of the Tomb Raider close to the film’s debut. After all, the movie is taking most of its inspiration from the series’ 2013 reboot.
If Shadow of the Tomb Raider is revealed around the movie’s premiere, that means we could see the game’s release date in summer or fall 2018. The fact that the marketing materials are already in the works is a good sign that the game is pretty far into its production.
It's not yet clear who is developing the new game. In 2016, Crystal Dynamics--the team behind both Tomb Raider (2013) and Rise of the Tomb Raider--hired Visceral Games veteran Ian Milham to become a game director for the Tomb Raider franchise, reinforcing the suggestion that the studio was making a new Tomb Raider game. However, the company is also working on a new IP and a new Avengers project. Sources from Kotaku have previously claimed the new Tomb Raider game is being made by Thief and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided developer Eidos Montreal.
